The first feel of winter comes to Sandpoint typically in
late September when light snow dusts the surrounding
mountaintops above 5,000 feet. But Indian summer settles
quickly into the community
and surrounding countryside as the snow melts and warm,
pleasant days often continue into November. Following the
autumn departure of the ospreys from Lake Pend Oreille, bald
eagles return to the lake for the winter season and when
snow begins falling in earnest in late November and early
December Sandpoint’s winter sports season begins.
