Picture taken from ontop of Schweitzer Mountain, by Kris KingslandDownhill skiing in Idaho has long been the premier winter sport starting with the founding of Sun Valley, America’s first resort designed specifically for skiing. Snow skiing in Sandpoint revolves about Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort atop 6,400-foot Schweitzer Mountain. With several hundred inches of snowfall each winter season Schweitzer draws snow skiing enthusiasts to its slopes throughout the Northwest.

The resort’s eight lifts and tows provide 2,400 vertical feet access to 2,500 acres of terrain featuring 58 named trails. A new high-speed, six-passenger lift will be available to skiers this season, along with 30 kilometers of cross-country ski trails.

Schweitzer’s ski-in, ski-out village atop Schweitzer Mountain is a small community in its own right. The 82-roomSkiers having fun on Schweitzer Selkirk Lodge provides slopeside luxury accommodations to skiers who can also enjoy excellent restaurants and retail shops. Some 450 fully furnished mountain homes are nestled throughout the rugged alpine terrain, and their availability as four-season mountain vacation retreats has put Schweitzer in Sandpoint, Idaho high on the list of many real estate bargain hunters throughout the West. Several hundred thousand skiers enjoy Schweitzer’s slopes each year.

At the bottom of Schweitzer Mountain, in the town of Sandpoint itself, an average of 72 inches of snow falls each winter. The town presents its visitors and residents alike a very relaxed, laid-back feel, particularly during its Hometown Christmas holiday season when candles burn bright in the windows of shops and office buildings. Meanwhile, out in the landscape surrounding Sandpoint, hikers, skaters and cross-country skiers enjoy the overpowering sensation of delightful silence, one of the most highly sought commodities in today’s fast-paced society.
