A family's thoughts and prayers are with their little girl tonight. Three-month old Kaitlyn D'Adderio suffered smoke inhalation this morning when her home caught fire. The fire started in the basement around 2:30 AM. A babysitter and her boyfriend were in the basement, but didn't know about the fire until a smoke alarm on the main floor went off. Firefighters rushed to the house on east Desmet shortly after 2:30 this morning. They quickly put out the flames. Smoke had filled the upstairs, and firefighters thought everyone got out safely. Four other children, the oldest a ten year old girl, made it out safely, along with a 27-year old babysitter and her boyfriend. But a three-month old girl was left behind in a swing in the living room. Firefighters passed by the infant several times, unable to see her due ot the thick smoke. "Once they were alerted in fact there was an infant in the house, they did find her and got her out." Firefighters say there were four smoke detectors in the house, but only one had batteries. "If the smoke detector in the basement had activated, this might have been one of those fires where you grab whatever's burning and throw it out the back door or throw a pan of water on it." Fire investigators say the mother told them she was at a friend's getting her car fixed. 27-year old Mandi D'Adderio had just moved into the house three months ago, with the help of S.N.A.P, the Spokane Neighborhood Action Program. The family has been in and out of homeless shelters, and was just getting used to their new home. The Red Cross is helping out the D'Adderio family until S.N.A.P. can find another home. If you'd like to help the D'Adderios, you can make a contribution to S.N.A.P. Their number is 456-7111.
