A woman was killed Wednesday and her home destroyed when fire raced through the two story building. Shortly before noon, fire crews were called to the corner of Mission and Maple, but by the time they got there the house was already engulfed in flames. Bright orange flames quickly burned through the wooden house as thick smoke poured into the morning sky. Inside, firefighters cut through the roof, trying to contain the fire. Outside, a victim lay unconscious as emergency crews performed CPR. The scene looked unreal to the neighbors, and some people were angry. "I think that's ridiculous, it's a shame, shameful situation whenever you've got people that are living in these old dilapidated houses and having to put themselves at risk, their children, their family, and one spark like this and the house goes up pretty quick." Fire Chief Bobby Williams. "It really comes down to when the building was built and then, when you modified the building, to which code you have to meet." The fire department says the house was old but codes for individual homes vary. "Most of the houses when houses are built are built to some code, they could've built to a code back in the 30's and met that code, then they may not meet modern building codes because nothing substantial has been done to it." And in the case of this house, no code could've prevented the damage inflicted by the fire. If you have any questions about housing codes, call the Attorney General's office at 456-3123.
